Real Life Stories From Our Customers

THREE VILLAGE TIMES – SEPTEMBER 2, 2005

Camp for Children on Etiquette and Protocol

While some children go to camps that stress sports or have themes associated with them like scouting or religious affiliations, a group of Elmont and North Valley Stream children attended a
special camp that will train them to be the business and community leaders of tomorrow.

Assemblyman Tom Alfano toured the camp and met with counselors , children and parents and listened to how young people are learning to work in groups, lead discussions, participate in social situations and the proper way to eat and interact in gatherings and affairs. Director of the Etiquette and Protocol Academy Cheryl Lee is the head teacher at the day sessions, which start at 8 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley Stream. At the camp, young people learn how to eat at a formal dinning table, how to communicate with adults in different social settings. “When you enter the camp, you see immediately that the children are having fun and learning something that will help them be even better leaders and business people of tomorrow,” said Assemblyman Alfano.

  “Whether it’s knowing the proper
fork to use or how to
i
nteract with people in a responsible way, these young people are learning and
having a lot of fun at the same time.” During Alfano;s visit he learned how the counselors teach their campers the
ins and outs of the program.“It’s
clear that camp makes the learning process fun and the children get into the activities and are not only learning
the points, but they’re given the
chance to put it into action with
activities that allow them to
demonstrate what they’ve accomplished,” said Alfano. “The
skills they learn are a gift that lasts a lifetime,” said Lee. I really want to
see more children involved and participating. When children have
been exposed to social settings and can be successful in navigating the do’s
and don;ts, they build confidence and self-esteem. They can then look at
their own personal goals and strive
to achieve them successfully.”

Assemblyman Alfano takes time out during his visit to speak with some of the children.

"I think that the seminar was beautiful.  As a teenager, I had a great time, I have never been to a seminar before".

"Manners are the happy way of doing things; each once a stroke of genius or of love -- now repeated and hardened into usage.  They form at last a rich varnish, with which the routine of life is washed, and its details adorned.  If they are superficial, so are the dewdrops which give such depth to the morning."

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~
